Transcommunicator I
This work evolved from a definition of the social model of disability. By that I mean I transcribed a written version of the meaning of the social model of disability into braille. Employing a programmable music box kit I punched holes in score scroll based on the braille dots. I then assembled a 'faux' projector with the music box player attached to the top and with a light where a projector light and lens would be. Following this I attached small transducers to the individual fingertips of a wooden hand. I placed a tiny microphone close to the music box and as the viewer turned the handle of the music box the sound was passed through a mini amp and was sent to the transducers using speaker cable. The viewer could then hear as well as feel the sound of the music box by placing their fingertips on the transducers.
The intention of the installation was to read the text of the social model definition, see it transcribed into braille the paper music scroll, hear the braille as sound, see the braille as patterns of cascading light and feel and then to experience the braille as tactile again on the fingertips; thus creating a multi-sensory manifestation of the description of the social model of disability.
